On Translating Descartes

Ms. Amanda Catanoso, an alumna of CUA’s School of Arts and Sciences sheds new light in the video below upon yesterday’s passage by Descartes by looking at how the passage reads in the original language in which Descartes wrote it, French. By the way, if anyone is interested in reading the passage in French or in following along during the parts of the video where Ms. Catanoso reads the French out loud, here is a link to the page in Descartes’s Discours de la Méthode (Discourse on the Method) where our excerpt starts.

Ms. Catanoso makes some really interesting comments about the differences she noticed between our English translation and the original words in French. What do you think are the advantages of studying a language different from your first? How do think that learning another language might help you learn more about your first language?
